KB943460 - Windows Explorer Slow

J

Jeff Givens

For a little while now I've noticed Windows Explorer being slow to update
its right pane when browsing. Often times it would take 5 - 10 seconds to
refresh the listing, even in a folder with little or no contents.

Inhibiting all non-MS services and all startup apps via msconfig made no
difference whatsoever. Booting in safe mode and everything was ok
speed-wise.

After playing around w/ repair installs I discovered that after some of the
more recent updates the problem came back. Further investigation pinned
this on kB943460.

I have seen only one other mention of this, some Kaspersky forum where that
AV program in conjunction w/ 943460 caused the same behavior.

I don't have that but do have Norton. However, totally disabling everything
made no difference.

A clean install (no other software loaded) w/ 943460 resulted in a properly
functioning Windows Explorer.

Anyone have any comments? Is there another way to get this fix in place, by
hand perhaps? Chances of a problem if the fix is left uninstalled?

Thanks.

IE version, please? Also state your anti-virus application, any
anti-spyware applications (except Defender), and any third-party firewall
(e.g., ZA; Comodo).

And how did you come to this conclusion? Did uninstalling 943460 stop the
behavior?

What does "clean install" mean? Is 943460 installed now and all is well?

ie7, Norton and ZA

By updating in pieces until the culprit was found. Confirmed by doing a
fresh repair install w/ all updates BUT 943460 - all ok. Add 943460 -
behavior returns.

Bare disk with nothing but Windows. No problem seen here when 943460 is
included.

Jeff, if everything's fine after installing 942460 (and all other critical
updates, we assume) without your Norton application and ZA being installed,
don't you think that Norton and/or ZA might be causing the slowdown??

To test:

1. After making certain you have a copy of your Product Key, uninstall both
all Norton software and ZA via Add/Remove Programs.

2. Enable the Windows Firewall.

3. Run this removal tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

4. Immediately install the 30-day free trial version of, e.g., NOD32* or
KAV7**

5. Manually update your new anti-virus application then run a full system
scan.

Does the slowdown persist now?

[Don't forget to subscribe to your new AV app or uninstall it then reinstall
the Norton application before the free-trial period expires! Should you
decide to reinstall the Norton application, I recommend not installing any
Norton Add-ons for a while.]

As previously stated, if all the services and apps are inhibited and then
booted the problem persists.

While not a guarantee, it would appear that the conflict is lying deeper
than simply NAV or ZA.

Also, for what it is worth, I haven't seen any mention from the ZA or NAV
communities of this particular hotfix causing any problems.

To keep track of things, it helps immensely if you include all of previous
message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup. Thank you.
As previously stated, if all the services and apps are inhibited and then
booted the problem persists.

That is not what you stated: You stated that if you installed 942460 without
Norton or ZA being active, there were no problems.

You asked, I gave you an informed answer as well as a way to test my theory.

If you want an literal argument, seek opinions elsewhere.

Good luck.

That is not what you stated: You stated that if you installed 942460 without
Norton or ZA being active, there were no problems.

Please read the first post. I indeed stated that the system exhibited the
behavior when all services and apps were kept from starting.

While not a guarantee, one could infer that NAV and ZA are not the problem.

Your offers of suggestions are appreciated but please don't chide me for
saying/mot saying stuff.

It may be a good idea to save this link should you have further problems
with MS security/critical updates

Windowsxp.general is not perhaps the best place to discuss this sort of
issue :)

Hi group
I have been reading this topic due to having "slowed down win explorer" and
my most improvement came when I looked at startup programes in device
manager...where I unticked>>>a) iTunes help. b) QQTask. c) WCescomm.
Hope this may help, but unable to explain why.
