create a sub folder

The folder already has sub-folders -in fact very many. I seem to have cured
the problem by having a tidy up and deleting many old files i did not need -
one of them was obviously corrupted because suddenly the +/- reappeared and
it was the same on my laptop which ahd the same files and sub-folders! What
puzzled me was how or why one file managed to have that effect on windows
explorer? Thanks for sugestion though, much appreciated.
