Exiting stand by mode

My roomate shuts my computer just enough for it to go into stand by mode, but
he doesnt shut it all the way. I can't figure out how to get it come back on
without losing what was open. I always have shut it off, then turn it back
on. So, my question is how do I get it to come back on?
 
Don't know if this applies, but with Dell laptops, getting out of Standby
mode requires you to press and hold the Power key for a longer period of time
than what you usually do to turn on the computer. Say 2 seconds.
