Exiting game equals Windows UI lockup

W

Wayne

For sometime now, when exiting any DX game, the Windows desktop UI will
not response to mouse or keyboard events - even the three fingered
salute does not respond.

Mouse moves around the screen, but I cannot interact with the desktop or
any other application running.

I have run the SP2 installer again, as well as installing the August
updates for DX, but this only makes it a certain "lock-up" when exiting
compared to a random one.

In addition to the above, I have run chkdsk several times as each time a
new error is detected, but so far nothing to point directly towards
Windows, DirectX or the games themselves.

Has anyone else experienced something similar, and found a solution?

Hi Wayne,

Are you having the same reaction using different version of video drivers?

My first thought was something with the Nvidia driver, so I had updated
to 9131.

The "lock-up" still occured, so I updated DirectX to the latest release.

That did not fix the issue.

I even thought it may be related to the games being installed before
running SP2 installer, but after un-installing and using Nortons Disk
Wipe to remove any trace of the folders and files the problem still occured.

Hi Wayne,

Do you have a lot of software from Norton's running when you're playing?
If so, try disabling all that software to see if it has a positive impact.

The only background Nortons app is NAV, as I have disabled everything
else that I was not using.

I should add that this has only just started occuring in the past few weeks.

Hi Wayne,

Since that problem just started happening recently, try a System Restore.

How to use Windows XP System Restore:
