exe files will not execute

after a freeze up when a USB device was plugged in. Windows restarted fine.
But links with program exe extensions would work. there icons are the
generic one with no association.

I am running XP Pro

Can you help, give some ideas

Right click on it and choose "merge".

Then you haven't extracted it yet. Double-click the Zip file and
extract it to the Desktop, right-click the .reg file and click Merge.

when you go to http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm
and download the relevant file, put it to your desktop. Then reboot in safe
mode.
When I tried it, it couldn't write to the registry because 'other files were
open'.
Rebooting in safe mode fixed this, and I could run the fix file.
