exe files will not execute

after a freeze up when a USB device was plugged in. Windows restarted fine.
But links with program exe extensions would work. there icons are the
generic one with no association.

I am running XP Pro

Can you help, give some ideas

MS-MVP Doug Knox has a fix for that, among other file associations. See

I don't seem to have "merge" on the list.

Then you haven't extracted it yet. Double-click the Zip file and
extract it to the Desktop, right-click the .reg file and click Merge.
