Excluding front and back cover from page count

I have a booklet; the first page is the front cover and the last page is the
back cover. How can I exclude these two pages from the page count? I have
page X of Y in my footer, but I don't want to include these two pages.

Page X of Y represents the construction "Page { PAGE } of { NUMPAGES },"
where { PAGE } and { NUMPAGES } are fields. What you will need to do is use
a calculated field instead of the NumPages field. To achieve this:

1. Display field codes (Alt+F9) so you can see what you're working with.

2. Before the { NUMPAGES } field, type an equals sign; after the field, type
" - 2" (without the quotation marks). This will give you:

= { NUMPAGES } - 2

3. Select that entire phrase and press Ctrl+F9 to convert it to a field. It
will now display:

{ = { NUMPAGES } - 2 }

4. Alt+F9 to toggle back and F9 to update if necessary.
