Exchange Account and POP3 usage / disabling server conect

I am using Outlook2003 with POP3 and Exchange Server accounts simultanesously. The Exchange Server account can only connect when I enable my work VPN, however my POP3 account connects without the VPN. I need to have Outlook enforce connection with the Exchange Server only when I manually select "Send/Receive Microsoft Exchange Server Only", otherwise Outlook will hang when I connect as it tries to reach the Server when I only want to access my POP3

I know there is one little check mark somewhere that I can select that will disable the attempted auto-connection of the Exchange Server. I had it set before, but I have just reformatted and can't find it. I tried disabling the Exchange Server account in the default Send/Receive group, but that doesn't work. Exchange still tries to synchronize when opening Outlook

Any suggestion??

Create separate mail profiles for Exchange and POP3 mail. It is the best
method for using Outlook with multiple transports.

the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

After searching google.groups.com and finding no answer, Chuck asked:
