Exchange 5.5 in Windows 2000 Domain

HI I am looking for any advise I can get on this subject, or any references
you may have.

Basically I have an NT4 PDC that currently has Exchange 5.5 installed on it.
I have a windows 2000 Database server that is just a member server of hte
domain.

My NT4 machine is running out of space, so I am getting a new server for
exchange. I will install Windows 2000 on this server and then follow the Ed
Crowley Server Move method, to move my exchange server over to this new
machine.

I am comfortable with this. I have just now installed an NT4 BDC into the
domain (it is only a very old machine so it is just going to be used while I
perform upgrades, as it was my intention of formatting and reinstalling the
PDC, again I am quite comfortable doing this.

However what if I were to upgrade to a windows 2000 Domain with AD. I could
upgrade my BDC to PDC, upgrade this to a windows 2000 DC, reinstall my old
PDC as a windows 2000 DC, then remove the first DC that I installed (as it
is the very old machine). does anybody have any comments on this?

Also what would I need to do to the Exchange server as exchange 5.5 would
now be in a windows 2000 AD?

Thanks for your help

Hey Stuart,
I'm in a similar situation...Have you done your upgrades yet? Which route
did you take?

I have an NT4 PDC and BDC and a member Win2k server running Exchange 5.5. I
have a new server with a fresh install of Win2k and I want to install
Exchange 2000 on it and get rid of the old PDC and BDC.

My thinking:
Promote BDC to PDC
Upgrade old PDC to Win2K and config AD
Config AD on new server
Upgrade Exchange 5.5 to 2000 on existing email server
Use move server method to migrate Exchange from one server to the other

What do you think?

why dont you try ADMT to mirgrate users account/computers into AD then use
ADC to move email box one by one?
I just had same question, but unlucky is we still stick with using Exchange
5.5, so I dont know how to move email box from old machine to new machine
after ADMT

Bruce,

I missed the first bit of this so please me if I misunderstand.

If you want to move Exchange 5.5 from machine A to machine B, why not
install Exchange 5.5 on machine B, move all the user *and system*
accounts and rehome the Public Folders across and then remove Exchange
from machine A.

I've done that and it works fine. You need to read up on it, on the MS
Website and elsewhere, and follow the correct procedures to finally
remove machine A,

Cheers,

I am just about finished with the exchange move.

I have an NT4 PDC, and an NT4 BDC, I will promote the BDC to PDC and format
the old PDC.
I will then upgrade the new PDC (old BDC) to windows2k with AD.

Then as I don't like doing upgrades, I will reinstall a fresh copy of win2k
on hte original PDC and create a second DC out of it.
I can then remove hte upgraded machine, and hey presto a fresh install of
win2k with AD.

At least thats the plan, probably thursday and friday

Backup, backup, backup.

Did I mention backups. Also I should give yourself plenty of time.
It's good that you are doing it before the weekend, if anything should
go wrong.

Oh, and don't forget to take backups.

Incidentally my first *upgrade* to Win2K/AD ran for well over a year
with no problems. There's nothing wrong with an upgrade on a
well-running machine.

It's a good idea to take backup before during and after such an
upgrade.

Cheers,

Cliff
