Excessive Browser Memory Usage

Guest

Whenever I run a browser, AOL or IE - whatever - my memory usage spikes to
100% easily and stays up there. In the "Processes" tab on the Task Manager
it's almost always the browser causing the spike, though the System Idle
Process will also be up there - and I don't even know if it's safe to turn
that off. :p I'm vigilant with anti-virus and spyware, use an optimizer,
but nothing seems to help.
My PC:
1. 2002/2003 Compaq Presario 6000 desktop
2. Windows XP
3. AOL 9.0 SE
4. IE 6
5. Added 512 memory card to original 128
6. DSL hook up

PLEASE - if anyone has help for me, please be sure to forward your post to
my email, (e-mail address removed), because it's so hard trying to find the right
newsgroup/forum.

You can troubleshoot xp by running: MsConfig From run,the details are
outlined in kb310560 Also,98% of pcs,one needs to add memory in pairs,
not simply adding another ram card,if 4 slots are available,1&3 should be
512,
2&4 would be 128mb,if you purchased more, usually as youre installation is
a pc wont even run...

....I only saw one slot back there when I inserted it - 2 years ago. This
memory problem may be of long duration, but more like one year.

First of all, the "System Idle Process" is reporting just exactly what
it says it is reporting - the percentage of the time that the system
is doing absolutely nothing. nada. zilch.

While AOL has improved somewhat I am still convinced that the prime
suspect for any problems of any kind on any computer with AOL software
installed is the AOL software. The only exception to this would be if
the computer also happened to have a Norton/Symantec product
installed, in which case the Norton/Symantec product would be suspect
#1 and AOL #2.

What are you using for an "optimizer"? Most of these so-called
optimizing products are pure unadulterated crapware that are totally
incapable of performing any useful function for any computer under any
circumstances.

And what are your antivirus and antispyware products? There are many
of these that are less than optimal in performance and reliability
(e.g. Norton) and some that are downright rogues that actually install
trojans and/or spyware onto your computer.

Good luck

<splort> Okay, now that I cleaned off the screen ... how would *you
recommend such an action to go through? The Windows menu-based systems were
a big breakthrough for people (like me) who could never get a hold of all the
DOS commands - I sometimes feel you have to be at least half a programmer to
use that. If it isn't on "the menu" or easily defined I have problems, if
for no other reason than that I'm not sure what I'm doing won't harm my PC.
