Exception number: c0000005 (access violation)

I have a program that used to work well, however recently it has given
trouble with Exception number: c0000005 (access violation) errors that
prevent it working.
I suspect that there is something that is specific in the registry which has
affected this and only this specific program.
I am not looking for an explicit "how to fix this instance kit", but a
method to follow to narrow my search, can anyone please help?

If a blue screen stop error, what is the exact error message
or a description from Drwtsn.log? And what is the application?
And what was, if anything, recently installed or updated in the
computer? The more the information, the better.
