excel to word paste-special linking

I am using Windows XP Professional and Office 2003.

When I try to open existing Word files that are linked to Excel it takes a
while to open the Word file. Also, when I try to update those same links it
takes even longer just to access the links.

Is there a better way to be able to update these links faster so that it
doesn't take 10+ minutes just to update the links for each Word file? (note:
some of these files can have 10-50 links)

Thank you for any suggestions you may have!

Hi =?Utf-8?B?Qm9iIFIu?=,

I'm actually surprised that the links are automatically updating in Office 2003.
The new security settings should be preventing automatic updating?

Are the Excel files in a network location, or saved locally?

Both the word and excel files are saved on our network. The files are not
updating when they should be since they are linked automatically. The problem
is that if you open up the excel file, then open the word file, Windows XP is
taking a very long time just to read the existing links. This happens again
when you try to update the links if for example you have changed the path
that the links are located under.

Thanks for your help and input.

As I indicated in my first reply, links will no longer update automatically due
to the new security arrangements. This article outlines the behavior, and what
you can do to change it.

This sounds as if it could be a network issue. To test this, put both document
and workbook on the local drive (you'll need to change the links in the
document, of course) and test whether it's appreciably faster. If it is, you
should follow up in the word.setup.networking group (possibly with a cross-post
to the office.setup newsgroup).

If you'd prefer to not make the necessary changes in the Registry
and/or want to easily modify the field security settings from Word
whenever you like then there is an add-in available that will make
these changes for you.

For more information on why field security was implemented and a link
to the download for the add-in take a look at this article:

A direct download link for the add-in can be found here:
