Excel insists on dividing my number by 100!

Dear Group,
Excel 2000.
I can only assume that somehow I've created this situation but I don't know
how.
I open a new workbook and type 7 into cell A1. (When I look at the cell
formatting
it says "General Number").
When I tab out of the cell Excel changes my number to 0.07.
It's as though somehow a divide by 100 has become the default.
When I export integer data from Access into Excel, that formats just fine
but when I
add another integer to an existing column of integer data - I get 0.07 again
instead of the 7 that
I entered.
I've moved my Excel doc. to another computer, opened it there and integers
are entered just
fine, so this is something that doesn't travel with the doc. but has become
a part of my Excel
install. So I 'repaired' Microsoft Office. Which I believe did a reinstall.
But the situation
hasn't changed.
If anyone has any ideas as to where I should look I'd be most grateful.

Linda

Norman,

thx for your prompt response. Your solution has fixed the problem. My
sanity was hanging by a thread!

I have a vague recollection now of being totally responsible for this
situation. I've been going through
some class notes from an Excel course I took several months ago, trying to
refresh my knowledge and I
believe I checked that Fixed Decimal at 2 decimal places thinking that - any
time in the future when I chose fixed decimal as the format that then it
would default to 2. The price I pay for trying to be too smart I
guess. :)

thx again. I REALLY appreciate your help. -L

Hi John!

You're not the first (or last) who thought that this was what that
setting did.

Hi Linda

Tools > Options > uncheck "fixed decimals".
It's a setting for people that has to punch tons of grocery prices all day so that they
don't have to enter the decimal separator.
