Hi,
I know that attachments are taboo in newsgroups, and the enclosed isn't one,
not one that will open anyway. Please accept my apologies for doing this but
I could find no other way of displaying it on the screen to demonstrate my
problem.
My query to anyone who can kindly tell me is that all my MS Excel files of
which I have many have ceased to show the familiar Excel icon and now show
as the icon shown here (which I think, but am not sure is the icon for an
application)
I don't know how this happened and I cant find a way to change them back,
can anyone please advise me?
Thanks,
Alan.

As you can see, your attachment or whatever you did doesn't come across
as a picture on my system (a Good Thing as far as I'm concerned), so I
can't identify the icon for you. However, Office does have a repair
feature you could try. Put in the cd and when it starts, choose
"repair". If the cd doesn't start (you don't say what version of Office
you have and sometimes older versions won't automatically start), then
open the cd in Explorer and double-click on setup.exe.
