Excel files with list function not opening in Excel 2000

I have some Excel files created in Excel 2003 which have made use of the list
command under Data - List. These files lock up Excel 2000 when it tries to
open them. If we remove the tab with the list function to another file, then
the file will open, and the new file with the list function information still
will not open, so it does seem to be that particular function that it doesn't
like.

Is that to be expected for files with the list function active? Is there a
way to get these files to open correctly in Excel 2000?

Thank you,
~Kyle

The Data>List function was introduced with Excel 2003 and is not backward
compatible.

Before opening the Excel 2003 workbook in 2000 you can convert the List to a
Range.

Data>List>Convert to Range.

Save the file.

The LIST command was new in Excel 2003, so it's not surprising Excel 2000
doesn't know what to do with a file using it. I have searched but have not
found a workaround. Unless somebody else knows a way, I think you will have
to convert the List back to a normal range to use that workbook in Excel
2000.

Hope this helps,

Hutch

Gord and Tom,

Thank you very much for clearing this up. This is the first time I have
ever run into a file made in Excel 2003 that wouldn't open in Excel 2000, so
I just wanted to make sure that was expected. This helps to clear things up
a lot!
