excel file is locked

Hi,
I have an excel file that is used by multiple users. The file resides on a share folder on a server that is published in DFS. All of a sudden when a user tries to open the file it says that the file is locked. I rebooted all the pcs that access this file including the server the file sits on. I still get the file is locked. any ideas?

Thanks

Hi Chris!

24 hours and no reply so I'll hazard a guess.

Most often with standalone computers this erroneous lock is caused by
crashing out of Excel leaving *.tmp files around that makes Excel
think that the file is still open.

So you might try to hunt down the mysterious tmp file.

With a server based file I would suspect that the tmp file will be on
the server.

It is imperative that the patches provided by Microsoft in its April
Security Release be applied to Systems as soon as possible. It is
believed that the likelihood of a worm being released SOON that
exploits one of the vulnerabilities addressed by these patches is VERY
HIGH.

Dear Chris,

Excel sharefiles sometime get locked by some user who have their
computer "crash" before exiting the share workbook, I often check the
"who has this workbook open now:" at Tools / Share workbook... and
remove all users who has the workbook open for more then 1 day ( I
suppose all the users will not work in the office for 24 hours ) this
will minimise the lock workbook syndrome from happening, it wouldn't
be surprise to see a long-long list of users still has the work book
open for months. But sometime the "lock" is too fatal you have to
save the file with a different filename and leave the original file
to the network administrator to delete or repair by rebooting the
server.
