Excel failure to save after update

My Excel 2003 has stopped opening files and saving files. I can open files
by choosing them in My Documents but not from the File Open in Excel. They
still will not save. Excel freezes when I try to Open or Save from the Excel
drop down menu. I did a system restore to the point just prior to a
Microsoft update and Excel Open and Save works again. Any idea what's going
on and how to fix it?
