Excel cannot complete this task with available resources

Dear all,

I've experiencing the error "Excel cannot complete this task with available
resources. Choose less data or close other applications" when I tried open
four Excel file which generated by program with ONLY data in cells. All four
files are around 16-17MB in size. Problem persist in three different computer
which all have RAM of 2G at least (Excel you at most 1G anywayz on ver. 2003).

The wired things is the error only occured when I tried to open all four
files in under the same Excel.exe, which is when you select all four files
from file explorer then press enter to open it. If doesn't work either if you
open the Excel application, then open the files by selecting File-> Open from
the menu, then select those files.

However, it works fine once you open the more than one Excel application,
and open those files in seperate Excel.exe (which you can see the Excel.exe
appear in the TaskMan twice).

I've applied the lastest service pack, hot-fix but have no luck. Any help
would greatly be appreciated. Thank you.

Is there any solutions for the problem posted below? Thank you.

Upgrade to Excel 2007? MS has a trial version of Office 2007 available.

Due to licensing issue, I don't think Office 2007 is a solutions, and isn't
it wired if 1) the Office 2007 still can't solve the issue, 2) if Office 2007
is not available, no solutions at all?

After all, I don't think Office 2007 is developed as a fixes prior to old
Office version.

Thanks for your advise anyway.

You have already solved the issue, as you state:

"However, it works fine once you open the more than one Excel
application, and open those files in seperate Excel.exe (which you can
see the Excel.exe (appear in the TaskMan twice)."

Not fixes, but Excel 2007 has increased limits in several areas, e.g.
Total amount of PC memory that Excel can use
Old Limit: 1GB
New Limit: Maximum allowed by Windows

See http://www.exceluser.com/explore/office12srcs.htm for more details.

It appears, as another poster has stated, that you at least have a
workaround.
