Hi

A friend of mine has a problem in Excel 97. I had the same problem a
few years ago. When you open a spreadsheet you can see the Excel
application menus and toolbars at the top of the screen and the status
bar at the bottom. However the space between where the worksheets
should appear is transparent and you can see the application below it
or the desktop.

I know Microsoft issued a Hot Fix for this at the time but I have
searched the Knowledge Base and cannot find any reference to it.

Any ideas?

Many thanks

Next time it happens, have your friend try File|Print preview.

If your friend can see the workbook that was opened, then the window into the
worksheet is just off the screen.

Window|arrange|Tiled
should fix this.

If that didn't help, then maybe the workbook wasn't really opened. (This can
happen when you double click on a filename in windows explorer. File|Open
should still work ok.)

Sometimes one of these works:

Tools|Options|General|Ignore other applications (uncheck it)

--- or ---

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults.
