Excel 97 will not open a shared network file, only flashes on the screen

I have a user who experiences trouble with a shared network Excel 97
file. It flashes on the screen quickly and closes. Here are some
observations:

-The file is shared and allows multiple users to use the file at once
and merge data.
-Change history tracking is turned off.
-The user remains in the


Other users have had problems until history tracking was turned off.
