excel 2002 opening excel 97 files as read only !!!!

some users using excel 2000, some using excel 97. typical "enterprise"
enviornment i guess. anyway, files open fine with excel 97 but when
opening with the "new and improved" excel 2002, a (read only) appears
at the top next to the file name.
this is a new one on me, it's not "backward compatible" ??

when excel 2000 opens the files, it says some "plugin" isnt there and
that there is an installer error 1605 or something but then opens it
just fine.

im truly lost on this one.

checked with cacls and is ok, the files are on a server and when copied
to a local machine there is no problem. workaround anyway. what is
truly a mystery to me is how if the user is using excel 97 or excel
2000 that the files open non-read only just fine and even allow saving
back to shared drive .
when openend with excel 2002 the files are read only. the other thing
that's wierd is that the excel 2002 machines cant save anything to the
folder either. it says the folder is read only.
could this be some kind of xp problem ? the workstations are running xp
and the server is nt 4.0

one of the machines that can open with excel 97 is an xp machine.
wierd problem.

guess im missing the point here, the point is that excel 97 opens the
excel spreadsheet, excel 2000 opens the excelspreadsheet (with error
messages) and excel 2002 does not open the spreadsheet in anything
other than "readonly mode"
thats the problem. more time spent in maintaining in the "enterprise"

we, like others have done, are abandoning any version of office later
than 2000. just dont have time to mess with it l.
