Excel 97 Number Format Error

Windows 98 / Excel 97.

A user will enter a number such as 2017 into Excel. Once he hits enter,
the number will be displayed as 201.7

This happens on every worksheet in every Excel file he has. Problem
happens on new Excel worksheets as well.

Ran excel /regserver; but this did not help. Removed and reinstalled
all of Office 97 but this did not help either.

Worksheet default cell format is set to General.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thank you!
 
go into tools=>Options and in the edit tab, uncheck Fixed Decimal
