Excel 2007 does not open correctly

Excel 2007 opens with blank screen, no toolbars at top, bottom status bar
appears at top and the page is frozen. All other products in Suite open
correctly although there does seem to be a short hesitation of a blank screen
before the correct display appears???

Running Vista Home Premium

I don't have an answer, JohnP, but you are not alone. I have the same
problem, intermittently. If I find the answer before anyone responds I'll
post it.

I have the exact same problem and it is really annoying. See screen shot. Will happen sporadically every 2 or 3 times I open it, straight from start or by double clicking on a file. Coming to think of it, my iTunes does something quite similar where it loads with a completely black window.

I'm having the same issue. Started intermittently, now it occurs constantly
and I can't see my files though they are open. Any help would be great!

Ned, I have found if you right click on the file name, rather than double
left click, you get the option to "Open With" - I then select Excel and the
file opens -everytime.

Happens to me too about 1/3 of the time.

This isn't a solution, but it's how I work around it. Hit Alt-F4, which
closes any window in Windows. This will close Excel and the spreadsheet
since otherwise, you can't see the top of the window to hit the X or
File\Exit. Reopen the spreadsheet. Sometimes I have to do this 2-3 times in
a row before a spreadsheet will open correctly. Sometime the spreadsheet
will open on the first try. Can't figure out why or when.

One thing I will note is that I have My Documents stored on a server running
the Windows Home Server beta, and I have offline files setup for My Docs on
my desktop. I am running Vista Ultimate on my desktop. I have noticed other
weirdness at times accessing files on the server (can't save the file, file
in use, etc), so I'm wondering if these Excel opening problems are another
example of a desktop/server hiccup. I don't think I've had this problem on
my laptop which also has Excel 2007 but runs Windows XP.

Works, sort of...

I checked the status of the "Ignore other applications" with the advice from the Microsoft Help page to clear the box -- but it was already cleared -- so I checked it, closed excel, reopened excel and unchecked it. So far so good.

Sort of...nope

I too spoke too quickly, as the problem recurred. Will continue to monitor for definitive fixes.

Excel opens blank -- this seems to work

Nothing in the Microsoft.Com pages seemed to work so I tried going directly to the excel.com file and modified the compatibility tab and I found a way to make the files open properly (so far anyway).

Note, I'm using Vista Home 32bit with Office 2007.

Go to the default location for excel.com at
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12

Right click and select Properties

Click on Compatibility Tab

Click the box for "Run this program in compatibility mode for:"
I selected "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)"

Will update if this doesn't stick as a solution.

The issue with Excel opening a "blank" Document has been occurring at
our Company's office since we upgraded to Office 2007. I have found
that every single instance of the issue has been caused by Adobe
Acrobat professional or Reader being installed, this only affects the
users who are NOT running the latest version of Adobe Acrobat 8.1. The
Resolution to this issue was to remove Adobe Reader and/or
Professional from the system. Once you have completed this step, you
may receive a "compile error" when you attempt to start Excel. If this
occurs you can delete the "XLSTART" directory from the followign
location "C:\Program files\Microsoft Office\Office12". The next time
you attempt to run Excel the windows installer will run and "repair"
the installation. Excel should now start without issue. You can also
re-install Adobe Acrobat, just make sure you install the latest
version.

I tried reinstalling Acrobat, and to my chagrin, I still can't get Excel to
open properly. The only way I can occasionally get Excel to work is to
restart my pc. If anyone finds a better solution please post.

Excel 2007 does not open

To fix Excel file does not open automatically when double clicked, try this:
1. Right click on Office Button (top left corner icon)
2. Left click on "Customize Quick Access Toolbar..."
3. Left click "Advanced"
4. Scroll down to "General"
5. Uncheck "Ignore other applications that use DDE"

This fixed my problem. I'm using Windows Vista Home and Excel 2007

I hope this helps make it clearer to understand for others with the same problem.
