Excel Excel 2007 backspace key won't clear contents

Hello,

In previous versions of excel I could highlight multiple cells, push backspace, and the contents (not the formatting) would be cleared. Now I can only do this one cell at a time. It is driving me crazy. I looked in preferences but couldn't find an option to address this. I am running Office 2007 on Windows 7.
