Excel 2003, CPU usage @ 100%

When using the following 3 excel spreadsheets in Excel 2003 (ver
11.6113.5703)

data_1: 30Mb uses matrix calculations (formulas enclosed in {}),
no external links
data_2: 1Mb no exteral links, no calculations
analysis: draws data from 2 data files above and performs matrix
calculations

While saving / re-calculating the file it can take upto 5 mins but the
fastest it does re-calculate is 2 minutes. I cant understand why this
takes so long and have referred to and performed all the suggestions
made in this and other excel newsgroups (remove *.xlb, empty temp
files folder etc).

Does Excel 2003 take long to calculate external links as i find the
issue only with this set of files.

Also when recalculating if i switch to another program (say Internet
Explorer) that screen will turn white and not show a previously
downloaded & visible page until Excel usage of CPU returns to normal
(2%).

Suggestions welcomed
Darryl

Hi,
I have similar problems. You mentioned some suggestions
regarding .xlb files and temp files -- could you refer me
to where you read about that? I'd like to try them on my
system.
Thanks!

Search the Google database for "CPU Usage" and include "Excel" if the
list is too long., You will see the various suggestions posted to
NGs.

Many folks have this problem and some have even suggested that it is
an issue with Win XP (get the latest op sys hotfixes) and hardware
related. No luck from IT support at IBM since the problem does not
directly appear to be hardware related.

1. *.XLB shows customised icons in the menu bar. so rename any
files you find with this extension, re-start Excel and see if you
still
have the calculation problem. If not rename the *.XLB to get your
original menu bars

2. Empty your temp files folder which in WinXP you can do through
Disk CleanUp (cleanmgr.exe)
