Excalibur ATI Radeon 9200?

J

jpsga

My requirements for the AGP in this machine were:
1.Directx 9
2.4X or 8X
3.Had to run all tests in 3D MARK 2001
4. Slowest frame rate had to be 24FPS. As is a movie theater.

The 9200 was relativly inexpensive and it met my needs. The 3D score is 7560
3D marks. Acceptable to me.

Are these any good? Just saw one on ebay and was curious.

THANKS

Regardless of manufacturer, the Radeon9200 are not particularly good
cards. They seem to run on a popularity wave caused by the reputations
of the 9600 and 9800 families. But the 9200 are not only slow, but
also have stability and software incompatibility problems.
Even if you're on a budget, see if you can't afford a 9600SE or FX5200
instead. That's my advice.

So who told you that the *9xxx* in *9200* meant it was DirectX 9 compatible?

I'm trying to put together a DFI 865PE Infinity mobo with a Radeon 9200SE
and a Celeron 2.4GHz. With only the CPU, video card, and a stick Kingston
PC2100 memory in place I couldn't get the BIOS display. I returned the 865PE
as defective. Do you think there's a chance that the 9200SE stability and/or
software incompatibility problems could be the real reason I can't get the
BIOS display?

Dunno about the Radeons but I've had an,"Excalibur"(re-badged,"Pine
Technologies) Ti 200 for a couple of years with no real problems
except I've just had to clean the gunk out of the HS fan but that's a
maintenance thing that all users should do from time to time.

No, it shouldn't be. But then again, you shouldn't have any problems,
and you still have. It could be anything. Personally, I seem to always
have a few old videocards lying around, and yes, I think I would have
tried another, before giving up on the mobo. But no, I don't know of
any special reason to suspect your 9200. If indeed it is your 9200,
I'd assume it's defect.

I was thinking more along driver&software issues. 9200 doesn't support
DX9, but is supposed to be "DX9 compatible". Whatever that means, it
seems to generate problems with some DX9 games. But again, 9200
doesn't have the muscles for DX9 gaming anyway, so what the hell...
Cheap is cheap.
