Okay. I used to have two domain controller, and one of them was
hanging to login, so I just got rid of it completely.

Right now I have only one domain controller, I transfered all the
roles, but everything seems to be down, and it keeps giving me "Unable
to establish connection with Global Catalog.". I can not even print
from the other computer.

I tried to use ADSI edit to see if I can do something and that doesn't
even connect to my domain. "The specified domain does not exist or
could not be contacted.".

What am I supposed to do? I searched a lot on the web to solve the
problem, and
I don't know what to do or try at this point.

Was this server a global catalog server? If not from active directory sites check the option for global catalog and see.

good luck

Yes, you'll need at least one GC! Here's a nice, pretty article that shows
you how to do this ;-)

Also, it probably is, (but check anyway) ensure that the current DC is
pointing to itself for DNS.

Was the server that you 'got rid of' the first DC you built?? If it was,
then it will probably hold all of the FSMO roles. Take a look at these
articles to see how you should seize these roles to the other DC:

The one that is down was a global catalog server. Let's call this
server A.

But I got rid of that server, and transfered all the roles to the
other domain controller. Let's call this server B.

So the server A is disconnected from the network, now I am trying to
make things working with only server B.

Okay now I try to run Active Directory Site and Services, then
"Naming information cannot be located because: The specified domain
either does not exist or could not be contacted... "

Like I said before ADSI edit gives
"The specified domain either does not exist or could be contacted".

I mean.. I know something went very wrong.

But I just have to do something. There must be a way to restore or
recontruct things.

When you say transferred, I assume you meant seized (I listed two KBs in my
last post)?

So, server B now holds all five FSMO roles, but you can't get into sites and
services to configure it as a GC (which you need to do)?

First things first. This machine needs to have DNS installed, and needs to
be pointing to itself for DNS. Now, to be on the safe side, you should also
restart the netlogon service to ensure that all of the appropriate records
are in DNS.

If you can verify that DNS is configured as above, and that you've now
registered the correct SRV records (by restarting netlogon) then we need to
either make the DC a GC, make it think it's a GC, or get rid of the need for
a GC (temporarily of course)...

I've not been in this scenario so I'm just tossing out some ideas for you.
But let's give them a go anyway...

Check DNS and then report back, and we'll see what we can do...

Everyone/ anyone: Does anybody know how to configure a DC as a GC via the
registry??

Okay. I tried all that already..

But somehow along the way, I think I lost the global catalog.

My computer doesn't even let me use AD sites and services.

It doesn't connect to the domain!

DNS is fine.

yah.. I did all that.

I guess this is as far as it goes.

Is windows 2003 any better than windows 2000 in this respect?

Only advantage of active directory for my purpose is just that it
let's you do automatic replication.

I would just better forget about all these time-consuming dfs/frs and
copy things by myself maybe using the scheduler.

Err, no. This is only an issue because you've been unfortunate enough to
break it ;-(

Are you able to restore the original box?? I know you should never bring
two lots of FSMO online, but excluding the RID (which wont matter as they'll
only be on-line for a very short period of time) and the PDC (which again,
shouldn't matter as you'll make the switch and then turn off again) there
shouldn't be an issue for a short period of time whereby minimal or no
changes are to be made. If you can, restore the other box, power up
(ignoring errors), load dssite.msc make the new box a GC, reboot and then
turn the old one off.

Or, perhaps you can modify all of the GC related SRV records to point to
server B instead? I can't see that working, but it might be worth a try. I
think that perhaps you need to log a call with PSS and get them to work
through everything with you. You'll get a lot more done in an hour on the
phone than bouncing messages back and forth here...
