Ever put anything "fun" into your db design?

Per Ricter:

I don't because if/when the wrong person in the customer org sees it, I'd
expect
them to say something like "I'm paying that moron X dollars per hour to do
stuff
like *this*?!!"

The last time I heard that from a customer was a long time ago. They
complained because they saw one of my crew with a rocket ship rising up the
screen on his first morning on contract. I enquired from the miscreant, and
was told "Its not mine, I hacked their system, it was on their chief
programmers files and I wondered what it did." That got translated as "He
was testing the systems response time."

I meant 'here at the office', Arvin. I used those sound clips in an internal
demo. The reaction could be described as 'puzzled'! :-(

I should have gone with the Simpsons! :-)

Per Jerry Whittle:
"creative" error messages.

Somebody, somewhere, made up these haiku error messages:
------------------------------------
Three things are certain:
Death, taxes, and lost data.
Guess which has occurred.

Seeing my great fault
Through darkening blue windows
I begin again

Everything is gone;
Your life's work has been destroyed.
Squeeze trigger (yes/no)?

The code was willing,
It considered your request,
But the chips were weak.

Windows NT crashed.
I am the Blue Screen of Death.
No one hears your screams.

Printer not ready.
Could be a fatal error.
Have a pen handy?

A file that big?
It might be very useful.
But now it is gone.

Errors have occurred.
We won't tell you where or why.
Lazy programmers.

Server's poor response
Not quick enough for browser.
Timed out, plum blossom.

Chaos reigns within.
Reflect, repent, and reboot.
Order shall return.

Login incorrect.
Only perfect spellers may
enter this system.

Wind catches lily
scatt'ring petals to the wind:
segmentation fault

This site has been moved.
We'd tell you where, but then we'd
have to delete you.

ABORTED effort:
Close all that you have.
You ask way too much.

First snow, then silence.
This thousand dollar screen dies
so beautifully.

With searching comes loss
and the presence of absence:
"My Novel" not found.

The Tao that is seen
Is not the true Tao, until
You bring fresh toner.

The Web site you seek
cannot be located but
endless others exist

Stay the patient course
Of little worth is your ire
The network is down

A crash reduces
your expensive computer
to a simple stone.

There is a chasm
of carbon and silicon
the software can't bridge

Yesterday it worked
Today it is not working
Windows is like that

To have no errors
Would be life without meaning
No struggle, no joy

You step in the stream,
but the water has moved on.
This page is not here.

No keyboard present
Hit F1 to continue
Zen engineering?

Hal, open the file
Hal, open the damn file, Hal
open the, please Hal

Out of memory.
We wish to hold the whole sky,
But we never will.

Having been erased,
The document you're seeking
Must now be retyped.

The ten thousand things
How long do any persist?
Netscape, too, has gone.

Rather than a beep
Or a rude error message,
These words: "File not found."

Serious error.
All shortcuts have disappeared.
Screen. Mind. Both are blank.

Per Gina Whipp:
Those are priceless, can I use a few?

I'd think so. I found it somewhere some years back and the source didn't have
any attribution.

This sounds interesting, but my newsserver seems to have missed the original
post.
Anyone care to repost it here??

Thanks,

Chris.

Arvin

When my PC shuts down it plays the wav with HAL singing "A Bicycle Built For
Two" as it slowly fades away.

Actually, don't worry, found the whole thread in Google Groups...

Cheers,

Chris.

I guess we've all built goofy things into our apps at least once.

Save yourself some embarrassment by asking yourself, "Would the CEO find
this amusing?" Probably not.

How about, "My mind is going, Dave. I can feel it." Many's the time
I've said that to myself as I lose my grasp on some complex code.

The reaction proved to be a little disappointing - hardly anyone around here
remembers the movie! :-(

I've had people who claim to be hard core sci-fi fans give me blank looks at
HAL's phrases. But if I say anything about tribbles (which was filmed about
the same time frame) I get a knowing grin. I guess HAL and Dave's fan club
isn't as big.

Could be just the difference between theater movies and television.
Different audiences, at least to a large extent!

I actually had both wavs spliced. Mind going was first, then Daisy, but it
played too long and took forever to shut down.

Not knowing the references can sure kill a joke, eh? The first few times I
presented my "Internet Safety Awareness" class for my students, during the
discussion of spam, I would illustrate the origins of the term by breaking
into a full-throated version Monty Python's "Spam" song (singing all the
parts...). It didn't take long to realize they had NO clue why the teacher
was doing this - and explanations didn't make it any better...

Oh, well, I can always sing in the car during my commute...

Cheers!
Fred

P.S. All together now... Spam, spam, spam, spam... SING!

Fred,

On behalf of all the communters who drive along with you, please roll up your windows when you're
singing.
Thanks.
