I know that one way to ascertain whether you have been hacked is to check the event viewer, but I don't know how to read the info. What do I look for? Dumb hey!
Can anybody help?

I have not heard about this yet. But this may depend on what you mean
by "being hacked" exactly. If you think that your machine is infected
with some malware, take a look in the Task Manager while no programs
are running and you should get more help here than with the Event
Viewer.

The way to detect if someone is attempting to access your system from the
outside is to have a firewall. XP has a built in firewall, not turned on by
default and it gives no alerts nor does it provide protection against your
system sending outgoing responses.

There are several free firewalls that handle the task, check the following
sites:
www.sygate.com
www.zonelabs.com
http://www.tinysoftware.com/home/tiny2?la=EN
http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpost/

If you are worried about malware, try the following utility:
Ad Aware, www.lavasoftusa.com
