Event Viewer System Log Error #51 and #50

My external drive seems to keep failing - when I check the event viewer to
see what is happening I see mutliple instances of error #51 "an error was
detected on device %1 during a paging operation" - the "explanation" is
listed as "an input/output (I/O) request to a memeory mapped file failed and
the operation was retried"

Eventually I seem to lose the connection to the external drive and I get
error #50 "{Delayed Write Failed} Windows was unable to save all the date for
file %1"

First, can someone translate this into English, and then also give me some
idea of what to do to stop this?

Isi it as simple as replacing the USB cable between my computer and external
drive, or am I facing something more complex?

Have you installed the Windows XP SP2 update? Certain bugs producing
this type of error were fixed in SP2.

My apologies,

I am running WinXp Pro 2002 SP2
The main machine is an old Gateway w/ a Celeron 400 chip and the external
drive is a LaCie 80GB USB 2.0
