Event Viewer failure

I updated my daughter's XP Pro with SP2 (genuine MS d'load) the other day
and decided to do a general cleanup.
WMP, since the install, always opens on bootup - why, I haven't worked out
yet, but also the PC now tends to freeze, with vertical green horizontal
stripes down the screen, necessitating a reboot.
I checked eventvwr to see what it had to say, but to my amazement found the
System dates only ran up to 23/02/2003 followed by a dozen dated between
1-10/10/2033 !!
Does anyone have a clue what's happened here, mainy with Event viewer for
starters.

The system seems to be completely clean, latest AdAware & SpyBot which found
a few, plus full AV scan which showed clean.

Oh, also the dates (including Application dates) begin 01/01/1970 - not bad
for a 2 yr old machine.

No responses to my previous post, so I will simplify my query.

In Event Viewer (eventvwr), both in Application & System, the dates begin at
01/01/1970 and run fairly consecutively only as far as 23/02/2003, then is
followed by a dozen entries dated from 1 to 10/10/2033, which makes it
impossible for general troubleshooting !! (This PC is only 2 years old).

Does anyone know if it's possible to clear & then reset Event Viewer so I
can resume with a clean slate and a current date?
