Event viewer fails to populate properties pages

Someone posted on this a long time ago (found the post) but no solution have
I found.

When opening Event Viewer and trying to see the properties of a specific
event, the window will flash and
disappear, leaving just Event Viewer itself. I can see the event ID there,
but I cannot get the error message
or information on it beyond that.

Have scanned for Virus, spyware, etc. on this PC, no answers there.. I can
see their error messages, but unsure of the root of them as I can't open up
the properties on them.

Tmservo,

Check the version number of Wmiprvsd.dll, located in
WINDOWS\system32\wbem. Depending on which service pack is installed, it
should be at least :

WinXP 5.1.2600.105
XP SP1 5.1.2600.1142
XP SP2 5.1.2600.2180

If the version is correct, try re-registering it :

regsvr32.exe wmiprvsd.dll

You should get a DLL successful registered message.

Tried it, and checked the file (5.1.2600.2180) still no-go. Hmm.

Shucks. Perhaps running sfc /scannow will replace any damage/corrupted
system files. WMI issues like this are rare and there are few references
for them.

Try re-registering this .dll, just for the heck of it :

Regsvr32 wbemupgd.dll

It should take 3 or 4 minutes to complete the operation.

If this problem is recent it may have been caused by the most recent critical
updates to Windows XP Tuesday 10/11/2005. I updated my wife's pc on Sunday
10/16/2005 and her machine experienced this problem. I had to use System
Restore and restored to 10/15/2005. Problem was then corrected. Microsoft
has acknowledged that there have been reported problems with this set of
critical updates.

Good Luck,

Hospo

Wow.

I tried this, and now when I try to access event viewer I receive this
message:

"Unable to complete the operation on "System", The interface is unknown"

YOWCH!

OK, fixed that. For some reason, re-registering the DLL caused Event Viewer
service to turn off, had to re-start the service.. that fixed that.

Now just back where it doesn't display the information in the logs (ie,
double click on the event, you get a very brief "pop" and that's it)
