Event Viewer does not show events unless F5 is pressed

We are having some issues with Event Viewer on a Windows 2000 DC running SP4. For whatever reason, when the event viewer is opened, it does not display any of the events; Application, Security, System, etc., until F5 is pressed. Can someone please tell me what is going on? This is the first time I have seen this sort of problem.

I also have this problem with Event Viewer. In my case, I can view events
in the application log by pressing F5 (or refreshing). My system log shows
220 events, but I can't view them at all, no matter what I do.

I have SP4 installed + all later hot-fixes. The problem seems to have
arisen in the past 6 weeks or so.
