Event log error - predicted will fail

In Windows Server 2003 the event logs are reporting the following error:

“The driver has detected that device \device\Harddisk1\DK1 has predicted
that it will fail immediately. Immediately backup your data and replace your
hard disk. A failure may be imminentâ€.

The first hard disk error that appeared on 7/07/04 referred to disk 0 which
is a hardware Raid disk. A few weeks later we put the old Windows NT box IDE
Seagate Barracuda 7300.7 40 gigabyte hard disk into the system as a backup
drive the error message started reporting the problem as being on the new
backup disk (disk 1) and not the original Raid disk anymore. What is
interesting is that this error only appears about 1 hour after the Windows
2003 Server has been rebooted.

In order to ascertain exactly what was going on we did a reboot with both
hard disks in the system. The above error appeared in the system Event
Viewer that Disk 1 (the old Windows NT box IDE Seagate Barracuda 7300.7 40
gigabyte hard disk) was about to fail about an hour after the reboot. We
then took this disk completely out of the system (leaving only the original
Raid hard disk) and rebooted. About an hour later exactly the same error
appeared in the system Event Viewer only this time it referred to the
original Raid disk (disk 0). Very strange……….

The Motherboard on the Server is a 4PDA2 Series Motherboard and is an Intel
i865-PE main board for an Intel Socket 478 processor.

The Windows 2003 Server sees the hard disks drives as follows:

What is the event source? If it is from your array management software then
the controller may be responsible for the logs. A few months ago I had event
logs for two of 4 36 gB drives reported as failed. Entering controller bios
confirmed that the failure bit was set on both drives. Dell replaced them
both. See what controller bios reports and also download a diagnostic
utility from the drive manufacturer's web site.
