I have installed a new server (w2k, SP4) into an existing
domain. Unfortunately during startup I get the following
error in my system log:
"Failed to authenticate with "server name" a windows NT or
windows 2000 domain controller for domain SRAM

Any ideas what caused this?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello Patrick,

That error is usually caused by a broken secure channel. You should be
able to:

1.) Delete and recreate the machine account.

or

2.) Disjoin the domian and rejoin it.

or

3.) Use netdom to reset the secure channel.

Hi Patrick. Assuming this is a W2K domain make sure that server is pointing to a
domain controller for the correct domain as it's preferred dns server. Check Event
Viewer for any clues and make sure that the times of that computer and the dc are in
synch. Also run netdiag on that server looking for any failed tests that may provide
a clue, particularly kerberos, secure channel, and domain membership. --- Steve
