Event 7000 errors, and question about registry keys

Brian Reynolds

I recently purchased and tried to install Mcafee VirusScan
8 without success. I began trying to track down the
problem by contacting Mcafees Tech Support, big mistake -
they don't have a clue. Anyway, I finally determined that
the error was happening when the installation program
installed and tried to start the mcupdmgr.exe service. It
is kicking out the following error information:

Source: Service Control Manager
Event ID: 7000

Could not start mcupdmgr.exe service on local computer
Error 3: The system cannot find the path specified

Information on my system, Windows 2000 Professional sp4
and all the current HotFixes, running Explorer 5.5 with
all the current updates.

On the Registry Keys also related to Mcafee,
On the recommendation of Mcafee Tech support, I abtained a
list of the registry keys for Mcafee VirusScan from the
Mcafee website to remove all registry entries from my
previous version of Mcafee to proform a completely clean
install of Ver. 8. On some of the keys I am getting the
following error under regedt32.exe

Registry Editor could not delete the key currently
selected.
The key, or one of its subkeys does not give you delete
access.

Any help?

Thanks for your time and hard work!

Do you have any other AVP loaded? They don't get along at all.
If you do, uninstall it, uninstall McAfee if it did install, remove them both
from the registry, install McAfee again.

Suggest any time you are going to jack with the registry (regedit or
regedt32) you make an ERD and do a full backup w/system state checked.

Boot into Safe Mode to delete the registry items.
If you don't know what to do with the registry, goto
Start > Run... > "type" regedt32 <enter> (local machine[HKLM] and current
user[HKCU])
HKLM >Software >(look thru the list and delete McAfee and whoever "i.e.
Symantec")( be sure, if it is Symantec and you have other products of theirs,
don't remove keys you still have their other products installed) If in doubt, do
nothing, come and ask. Now reboot into Safe Mode again and go look to see what is
in the registry(McAfee and whatever should be gone) Close the registry, and
install Mcafee while you are still in Safe Mode.If all is well now, reboot again
and do this before anything else. Start >Run.. >"type" cmd /k chkdsk /v <enter> .
It shouldn't take long. After "type" exit <enter> . Then Defrag it real quick.

Now see if you can open Mcaffee Auntiveral.
If it worked, you might want to do another ERD and backup with it loaded after
running it for a day.

Make sure it is live checking your email, and all of the settings are correct.
