Eudora is unable to download mail

Today, Eudora is unable to download my mail from the mail server. As soon as
it attempts to download, it hangs and has to be killed with ctrl-alt-del.
This also happened a month ago. Then, I was able to fix the problem by
uninstalling Eudorda, reverting to an earlier restore point, and
reinstalling. Today, System Restore is unable to restore any recent restore
points. Both today and a month ago, simply uninstalling and reinstalling
Eudora does not fix the problem; going back to an earlier state of the system
seems to be essential. I could try going back to my most recent system state
backup, but that will involve a lot more uninstalling and reinstalling and
may or may not solve the problem.

Does anyone have other sugggestions?

The Eudora email program is not a Microsoft product.

If you cannot download email from your ISP's email server,
then you have an issue with your ISP. Windows XP would
not suddenly prevent email from downloading unless you
have the incorrect POP3 and SMTP settings. Those settings
must be obtained from your ISP.

Likely a problem with your Eudora spool directory. There is either a corrupt
file there or your anti-virus program is deleting files from there and then
when Eudora goes to get them they are gone. First thing to try is rename the
spool directory (it's a subfolder in your Eudora installtion directory) and
see if that fixes the problem. If it doesn't you may need to configure you
AV program to ignore the Eudora spool directory.

Also try the comp.mail.eudora.ms-windows newsgroup

This has been working correctly for two years except for the current incident
and a similar one a month ago. It is failing for two different POP3 servers
(two different ISPs). I have checked all the POP3 and SMTP settings for both
servers. As I said initially, I had this problem a month ago and fixed it by
uninstalling Eudora, reverting to a previous restore point, and reinstalling.
Unfortunately, this time all my restore points fail and so I am looking for
another solution. I am going to give Fuzzy Logic's suggestion a try but if
anyone else has insights, please post here.

Thanks, Fuzzy. I will give it a try.

I tried renaming the Eudora spool directory and opened Eudora. It hung in
the same way. It had created a new spool folder and subfolders for the two
POP3 servers that I use but there is nothing in any of them since it hung
immediately.
I will try the newsgroup you suggested but meanwhile, has anyone any other
suggestions?

Based on my previous experience, I think that my main problem is that System
Restore said that I can't restore to any of the restore points that I
previously created. I will eventually reset System Restore but that will
guarantee that I can't back up to prior to the reset, so I am hoping to find
another way to solve the problem.

My problem turns out to be caused by Norton Personal Firewall. I turned off
NPF, turned on Windows Firewall, and contacted Symantec.
