eTrust ez Antivirus real-time scan not working

S

Stubbo_of_Oz

I am using Win XP Home SP2 with eTrust ez Antivirus 7.2.0.0

I have uninstalled and gone back to version 7.0.6.7 and it has the
same problem.

Real-time scanning is checked to work but when I run eicar.com the
virus checker does not react to it like it used to.

Sometimes I get a signal from windows security that the virus checker
is turned off even though all scan settings in the virus checker are
enabled.

CA techsupport told me to do all the things at:-

http://tinyurl.com/7omu7
http://cexx.org/lspfix.htm

but nothing helps.

Now CA will not reply to the emails that I send to them.

Anyone else with this problem?

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Dump it like I did?

Latest version wouldn't work on my XP box, crashed whole OS using with
Iranviw.
Made Pegasus terminate.
Etc.
I'm not the only one, either.

Tech support offered silly crap like Winsock fixit util and other absurd
suggestions.

Been using CA EZ AV since before it was even a pay for proggie, but his
was too much. I got refund and dumped it.

Been fine with free AVG ever since.

Thanks MoiMoi - I was reaching the same conclusion - i.e. dump and ask
for refund - how did you go about getting the refund?

Cheers ............

I just did it online through their help form submission, the one
regarding account probs.
Unlike helping with the app itself, they were quick to respond to
refund.

What I meant was, since I had used credit card, they credited it back
with the 19.95 renewal fee; the whole amount, even though it had been
done several months before.

CA has had issues for the last week or so.

From cNet
"Some Windows 2003 users have been experiencing problems with the
operating system after CA antivirus software wrongly detected part of
the operating system as malicious software last week."

I have some suggestions for you to keep your system clean using free
tools.See below.

G'Day MoiMoi. Thanks for repsonses - sorry for late response - been
away.

I'll give that a go - amazing that they will respond quickly to a
request for a refund!! Maybe they don't want too much talk in
newsgroups about probelms?!?!

Cheers .......

Don't know why there would be talk about problems.....I have used it and
InoculateIT before that for about 6 years minimum. Just downloaded
another free year of it about 2 weeks ago and absolutely NO problems
with EZ Trust at all.

Can't remember what your problems were, but did you uninstall the
previous versions? Could have been part of it.

=================================
I also used it since it was free InoculateIT, no probs until the 7x
versions.

My first probs were on a new machine, fresh install.

CA's answer: don't use Pegasus (even though they used to advertise CA AV
for Pegasus, Eudora, etc. Still say, any POP emailer). Now say don't
support them.

CA's answer: don't use IrfanView. Most widely used image freebie in the
world.

CA's answer: don't use WordPefect. Matter of fact, don't use any Corel
product.

Etc.

My answer: don't use EZ AV.

Freebie AVG has done very nicely.

I only use OE......but always do a fresh install. Using 7.2.0.0 at the
moment.

I have used Irfanview for about as long as I have used EZ Trust....no
problems.

I am a diehard WordPerfect user......for longer than I have used eZ
Trust and have had no problems with it here either.
My answer: don't use EZ AV.

It is NOT EZ Trust that is the problem obviously, if I am using XP and
Irfanview and WordPerfect with Version 7.2. You have problems.....I
don't. So what is different? Or are you using WinME? But I didn't
have problems with the 3 things on that one either.
Freebie AVG has done very nicely.
Probably.....I almost downloaded it, but went for what I knew best and
what works for me. Each to their own.

If anyone wants the link for the free trial of EZ Trust, it is part of
Microsoft and I do have it here.

I have used this for 3 years now. Used to pay for it.

XP Home here, dual core 3GHz box, 2 GB ram.

ONLY prob on the new machine was the CA AV once I installed it.
Uninstalled, reinstalled, registry checks, etc.
Could turn the email protection off, and Pegasus was okay, but about
every third time of starting Irfanview, entire system would reboot;
really takes a big effort to bring the OS down that way.

Another friend, even geekier than moi, and long time CA AV user, had
similar probs on both an XP Pro and a Win 2K box, once she updated to
the latest CA AV 7 version, 7.2 was it?

At any rate, we both narrowed it down to the EZ AV, no other probs.
Obviously, CA knows about it, hence the quick refunds, no questions
asked. I'd say they're used to it. I DID get one coherent message from
one of their techs among all the canned ones, admitted that they had
many reports of system instability with the latest version of EZ AV and
were "working on it".

But as you say, whatever works, works.

best,

Thanks for the snipped answer, MM.......but a small clue jumped out at
me. I NEVER have the email d/l protection on, no matter what. If you
talk to the MS Outlook Express guys, they will tell you the same thing.
Perhaps that is all it was. And 7.2.0.0 is the version on this XP
machine and no problems.

Real-time scan not working. Tried everything techsupport suggested to
no avail. Yes, I have uninstalled and reinstalled a few times.

I too have used it since InoculateIT and it has worked well until
recent update. Went back to old version but still did not work.

Using WinXP Home SP2.

Something must be causing a conflict and obviously CA do not have a
clue!!!

If you read what I wrote, I mentioned that I disabled email protection
and that enabled Pegasus to survive, but that didn't affect the OS
crashes.

Oh well, already I don't miss it. CA is almost as arrogant a company as
Microsoft. Almost.
