Errors while reinstalling XP

Hi,

After numerous problems encountered when installing a
modem, I had to reinstall XP. I chose the "upgrade" option
chosen on the install screen. While installing the
devices, the coputer shows a blue screen (not the blue
screen of death) with the error message BAD_POOL_CALLER.
It will go no farther. Any help would be appreciated.
