WORD 2002:
When working in a custom template and using a custom toolbar shortcut for
headings, the settings for H1, H2, and H3 Headings changes from initial font
setting to full caps and bold.
Also when using soft returns in a sentence that existing line changes to
full justify across page.

Help

It sounds as if the styles in the custom template are defined as described.

Our custom toolbar H1, H2 and H3 headings are custom set to match our
department needs the problem is these settings are not staying constant and
different document Authors will inadvertantly have these custom setting
changes to All Caps bolded. The bug as i would call it affects diffierent
office staff at different times which makes it very difficult to pin point
one problem.

Our custom toolbar settinge for numbering sequence and font are as follows:

H1: 4.0 All Caps Bolded
H2: 4.1 Title Case bolded
H3: 4.1.1 Lower case

HELP

The intermittence and irreproducibility of the error to me suggests a high
likelihood of operator error.

This is not operator error. The toolbar is simple to use if you need any of
the H1, H2, or H3 headings you simply click on that toolbar icon. The
problems is the toolbar icons are all coming out All Caps and Bold. Now tell
me how can taht be operator error.

This heading error has shown no pattern. Indiviudal document author are
getting hit with this bug on different days and times. An author may have the
problem with the document one day and open another document the next day and
the newly opened document is fine with the H1, H2 and H3 toolbar buttons
performing as required.

Thanks

The Custom template we work from makes it so

My understanding is that the H1, H2, and H3 buttons apply the current
formatting of Headings 1, 2, and 3? If the style has been inadvertently
modified in any given document, then the buttons will still do what they are
supposed to do (apply the correct style), but the style definition will be
incorrect.

Our current problem is the seting for our predetermined headings are changing
on their own. The strange aprt is the so called bug is not happening to all
documents or all authors. It's as if the document has a bug. Keep in mind non
of the author are changing the heading settings they change all on thier own.

Are any of the styles set to update automatically?

Suzanne,
Different Individuals in our departmant have clicked on automatic document
template update and others have not chosen this feature. They have both
experienced the same problems.
Our custom template has preset functions for a toolbar that uses buttons
listed as H1, H2 and H3. The designed format/font we have set for these
buttons inadvertantly changes all three toolbar buttons to a format/font of
all capitalization and bold for the text.

The setting I think you are referring to ("Automatically update document
styles") is not the one I'm referring to. I'm referring to the "Update
automatically" check box in the Modify Style dialog. If that is checked for
any style, then whatever changes you make to any paragraph in the style
would be applied to the style itself (see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/WholeDocumentReformatted.htm). You
might also want to check the style inheritance
(http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/styles/HowStylesCascade.html).

What I have tried (apparently ineffectively) to get across is that the
problem is not with the toolbar. All the toolbar buttons do is apply the
assigned styles. If there is a problem with the styles, then the toolbar
buttons will appear not to work as intended.

You can get an idea of how this works in a document containing paragraphs in
several styles.

1. Open Tools | Customize.

2. Select the Toolbars tab and click New...

3. Give your new toolbar a name and then switch back to the Commands tab.

4. Scroll down to Styles in the Categories list and select it.

5. In the Commands list, select a style and drag it to your toolbar.

6. Repeat for several more styles, then close the dialog.

You now have a toolbar with buttons for several styles. When you click the
toolbar button, the appropriate style will be applied. If you modify that
style, the button will apply the modified style.
