Pentium 4 1.5 Ghz, 1 Gb, Windows XP Home with SP1.

During the last week or so Windows Explorer and to a lesser extent Internet Explorer have been shutting down after errors. When they do so, the following error message is shown:

AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2800.1106 ModName: sbus.dll

ModVer: 1.0.0.3 Offset: 0000223b

In addition, the following path indicates that a file containing the full data relating to the problem is shown:

C:\DOCUME~1\STUART~1.STU\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER13.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt

Searches have not enabled me to get at this file. In fact much of the path is erroneous.

Though I am not versed in programming, I have been able to decipher the line in the message that the file SBUS.DLL is missing and that this may be contributing to the errors. However, the file is to be found in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32. Using Symantec's Process Viewer I have found it listed among the modules of Windows Explorer, so perhaps the problem may lie more in error reporting itself rather than the loss of an individual file.

Pursuing the reporting option to Microsoft has produced nothing useful. Usually all it says that the fault is unknown. It also suggests that installing SP2 might help. I have in fact attempted to install SP2 on two separate occasions. It always seems to end in tears, in that all my settings have been disrupted, scrambled or lost. On both occasions I was forced to uninstall it.

This problem has been driving me up the wall for several days. As Windows Explorer basically is Windows XP, any shutdown of the program can wreck whatever I might be doing at the time. Can anyone see a way out of the mess?

Stuart,

sbus.dll belongs to iLookup Toolbar/BHO which is categorised as malware.
See: http://castlecops.com/clsid-129.html

To temporarily prevent the error, and to enable W.Explorer and IE
functionality, disable all third-party browser extensions and begin your
troubleshooting. To do so:

1. Click Start, Run, type inetcpl.cpl
2. Click the Advanced tab.
3. Under Browsing, uncheck Enable third-party browser extensions (requires
restart).

Run these malware cleaners:

1. Ad-Aware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com

2. SpyBot S&D
http://www.safer-networking.org

3. CWShredder
http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html

Update 1 & 2 before running a scan.

Clean-up Windows Startup:

Then, run a full system virus scan with fully updated definitions. Try Trend
Micro's Sysclean package (free), it's capable of eliminating keyloggers,
trojans etc.

Generic Trojan / Adware Infestation Removal Procedure:

Once completed, don't forget to enable 3rd party browser extensions again in
IE Options.
