Errors in .pst file - Cannot open the Outlook window.

Runaround

I experienced the dreaded blue screen. After the computer re-started I could
not open my Outloook, and received the error message, "Errors have been
detected the the Outlook.pst file.l It further instructed me to use the
Inbox repair tool (Scanpst.exe) to diagnose and repair errors in the file. I
ran Scanpst.exe and it detects errors but freezes up when the 'repair' button
is clicked. No repairs result.
I found the Scanpst.exe in Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 12.
I am running Office 2007
Operating Sytem is XP Service Pack 2 (maybe 3)
Is there somewhere I can download a new scanpst.exe file? Or what do you
suggest I do now?
Thanks.

Did you maybe make a note of the actual BSOD msg?
And if you try scanpst.exe again does it run?
If you know your drive maker, have you downloaded/created their bootable
disk checking utility?

Runaround

( 1) The msg reads, "Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Cannot open the
Outlook window. The set of folders cannot be opened. Errors have been
detected in the File C:......./Outlook.pst. Quit Outlook and all
mail-enabled applications, and then use the Inbox repair tool (Scanpst.exe)
to diagnose and repair errors in the file."
(2) I ran scanpst.exe several times. I shut all applications and processes
down. As I said, the application runs, but crashes when the 'repair' button
is clicked. I have to 'end now' to get it to close.
(3) I will download my drive makers bootable disk checking utility now and
try that.
Thanks.

First you say it freezes, then you say it crashes. Those aren't the same
thing. Which is it? If the latter, what error gets generated?

guess I really don't know the difference between 'freeze' and 'crash'. When
I click on the repair button the hour glass appears and stays on. The only
way to close scanpst at that point is to use the 'end now' feature within the
Task Master.
Hope that helps, and is there anywhere I can download a new scanpst.exe file?
Thanks for your interest

There is nowhere to download a "new" scanpst. The scanpst that comes with the
version of Outlook you have is exactly the one you need. What I would do in
your case is to let scanpst run for an extended period just to make sure it
was hung. If scanpst can't repair the PST or never responds (after a period
of a few hours), then you'll need to pursue acquiring one of the many
commercial PST repair programs that are available. It could even be that
you'll never be able to recover the data in that PST. A BSOD is a serious
failure that aborts all I/O immediately and your PST could have been damaged
beyond repair.

Appreciate learning about this web site, but unless I missed something the
software costs like $129. And I cannot afford that at the moment. Did I
miss something?
Thanks

Its indeed true that you cannot download scanpst.exe anywhere, it is by default installed at the time of installing Outlook. But, you only have to use that in the correct manner and most important thing is that always keep a backup of the outlook PST before carrying out any repair task so that if it does not work as expected you could go for PST repair software or so, in order to get access to your data.

Click scanpst.exe twice for execution
Browse and select the outlook data file
Then start the scanning process
On its completion, click on repair hope that it works
