Errors during XP Pro installation

I am upgrading from XP Home to Pro. I keep getting a set up error saying
"installation failed: D:\i386\asms"
I can not get out of setup mode.

I have tried copying the I386 directory from cd to c: drive, but when I try
to run Winnt32.exe nothing happens.
I have also tried to use my old XP home disk, with the same results.

At this point I would just be happy to have my old XP home working.
Is there any way to get the set up to finish? Or even exit setup and return
to XP Home?

Thier is no "upgrade" from home to pro,the upgrade is for older windows OS.
To install pro from home, boot to xp pro cd,select install xp,new
copy,delete the
partition, create one, then xp formats and does a clean install.

Andrew E. this is totally wrong. XP Home is a qualifying OS to use an
upgrade version of XP Pro. Another one of your absolutely incorrect
replies.

Andrew E. has posted this same totally incorrect reply here many times. Each
time he does it, he gets corrected, usually by several of us. I, and others,
have even pointed him to the Microsoft page proving him wrong.

He never admits his error, he never defends his position, he simply ignores
the corrections. What more proof could anyone want that he is simply a
troll, and has no interest in helping anyone.

Yes, he's a troll for sure. I've seen this same reply from him multiple
times before.

Can anyone actually give me an answer?
Any help would be much appreciated.

I trust you backed up your data before embarking on this upgrade. If so,
just either take the XP Pro CD out and hit the reset button and see if
it boots back into Home. If not, you're probably stuck with doing a
clean install of either Home or Pro and lose all you data and installed
programs. If you're using a retail upgrade version of Pro, you do not
need to install Home first to upgrade to Pro. It will ask you to stick
in Home as a qualifying media and ask you to remove it after it checks
it and put XP Pro's CD back in.

If the Home install is not bootable and you haven't backed up your data,
put the hard drive in another computer as a slave drive and copy the
data over to that computer and then do the clean install.
