Errors during Installation of Windows XP

I am trying to upgrade to Windows XP from Windows ME. I
keep getting the same error message each time I try. It
occurs during the "Preparing for Installation" portion of
the installation.

I receive the following message:

"an error occurred copying file driver.cab to C/
$WIN_NT$/~LS/I386/driver.cab"

Before I tried installing, I did all the recommended
things. I ran the compatibility program, I removed GoBack
(as directed by the compatibility program), I ran Disk
Defrag and Scan Disk, as well as Norton's.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

May be a damaged or dirty XP CD, try cleaning it. Brasso wadding works
well. Polish in circles with it, it will leave a milky residue, polish that
off with a soft cloth. Also in my opinion much better to do a clean format
and install rather than an upgrade.

It's possible your CDRom drive may be dirty or misaligned. Try
manually copying everything from the i386 folder on the CD to an
install folder on your PC.

Then from within ME, change to the install folder and type in
"setup.exe". This will usually work if the CD drive is flakey.
After the installation is complete and everything is working OK, you
can remove the installation folder to save space if needed.
