Error when publishing my site from the server to my hard drive

Mary

I am receiving this error message about 1/2 way through
the publishing of my Site from the server to my hard
drive...
"An error occurred accessing your FP web files. Authors,
if authoring against a web server, please contact the
webmaster for this server's site. Webmaster's - please
see the system log for more details." I contacted my
webhost & all they could tell me was to unistall & then
re-install the FP extensions...which I did to no avail.I
am trying to Publish the site from the server to my hard
drive as I am on a new computer now. I have done this
before on my old computer (Windows 98) with no problem.
I am now running XP. I have installed the same version
of FP I had before. (FP 2000) Any ideas as what has
happened & what I can do about it?
Thanks in advance:
Mary

Which version of Windows XP, Home or Pro?
What is the path you enter to publish to, on your local machine?

Xp Home the path on the local machine is C:\Documents
and Settings\Curly\My Documents\My Webs\PointandCut

Mary,

Ok, tried this, create folder at c:\PointandCut, then open this folder in FP, FP will prompt you to
let it make it a web, allow this.

Next open the live/remote site and publish back to c:\PointandCut. If you have any subwebs, publish
them individually, after you have publish the root web.

Questions:
On your live site do you have any files that are over 1 MB in size?
Does you host store your server log files (stats) within your web space?

Hi:
Thanks for all the help & info!
When I open the site "live" in FP there are 2 "web"
folders in the folder list that I don't
recognize..."logs" & "test"...these folders are above
the "Private" folder in the folder list & have "web
folder" icons next to them. Is that what you mean by
does my host store server log files?
Also... when I go to the control center for my site,
under file manager there is a "Log" folder that has error
messages in it ...which don't make any sense to me. I
will check & see what these errors are if you need that
info.
Thanks again:
Mary

P.S. Yes...I do have some a video or two that are over 1
MB...never had a problem with that before though....

A few users have reported issue with publishing to/from FP running on Windows XP with file over 1
MB. This is a issue related to Windows or IE Update at some point this year, MS hasn't been able to
determine which update is the cause of this issue for some users.

Mary,

If they have the web icon, then they should be subweb, in which case when you publish do not include
subwebs. But I think the issue is 1 MB video files.

OK... How can I publish & choose not to publish those
subweb folders & also choose not to publish the video
files. I can always insert the videos from my hard drive
later, as I am just wanting to create the website on my
hard drive as a backup & they are already on the server.
I did just download all of the updated patches & stuff
from MS...was probably one of those that caused this.
Thank you!

Open the live site directly in FP, then right click on the Video files, select the Workgroup tab,
then at the bottom left, check do not publish.

As long as the folders are indeed subwebs, then when you select publish, do not check the box to
include subwebs. If you have other subwebs that you need to publish, you will have to open them, and
then select to publish them to c:\PointandCut\subwebname

Great!
Now after we've gone through all this I came up with
another idea! I have the website on my old computer, is
there a way to easily get it into FP on this computer &
still maintain the navigational structure, or am I better
off to Publish it live from the server to my hard drive?

If you can access the new machine from the old machine, then you can publish from the old machine to

By accessing the new machine from the old machine do you
mean connecting them with a cable? Then no, I don't have
access. I have CD burners on each machine, could I do it
off of a CD?

Ok, on the old machine publish the web to a folder, then burn your CD from this folder, then on the
new machine copy the content of the CD to a folder on your HD, then using Windows Explorer remove
all read-only attributes, then open the folder in FP and publish to the correct location on your HD.

However do it this way, when you get read to publish to the live/remote server you will have to do a
complete/full publish before you can use the Change Pages Only option.

hard drive....seems like less hassle (if it will work!)
Wish me luck:)
