Error when opening mail

I just got set up last night and I can't figure out why I continue to get
this error. I'm no computer gureau, but any suggestions would be
appreciated.

Account: 'incoming.verizon.net', Server: 'incoming.verizon.net', Protocol:
POP3, Server Response: '-ERR invalid command', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No,
Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC18

Two suggestions.
Make sure you have not enabled "Log on using secure password authentication."

Make sure you are not running either of the incompatible antivirus programs,
McAfee or Norton.
