error when installing new fonts

I am trying to add new fonts to Word 03 in Windows XP -- from fonts on Word 97 in Windows 98. When I try to install a new font file via the Control Panel, Add Fonts route, I receive the following error message:
"File xxxx is currently being used and cannot be replaced. Wait until Windows is finished using the file, and then try again."
Is there a way around this roadblock? ( The printer I have is able to handle these fonts (TrueType), for it did so when hooked to the older computer.)

This is nothing to do with Word or with your printer. Fonts are an operating
system issue. If you're getting that message on a font file, it means that
font is on your target machine already and is in use (eg the font is being
used for system messages, menus, or some such). Ignore the error and skip
that file. Either it will be an identical font file (compare the file dates
and sizes), or your XP version will be later and better.

I have checked all font files on my WinXP computer. None of them match the particular Win98 font files I am trying to add--either by name or size or date. I have also tried to copy the files via the DOS prompt, and then I get this response: "error performing inpage operation
