USING XP HOME SER PACK 1 on a Dell Dimension 4550, Pentium 4, 2.4ghz
chip, 512MB RAM
***********

Any time I right click on a SHORTCUT to a folder or disc and try to
open it via the Explore option, I get the error message "Windows
Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We
are sorry for the inconvenience" and then the Active Desktop Recovery
screen.

If I open, for instance, folder "X" via the right click/Explore
option, it opens the folder for me to view. But if I do the exact same
thing with a SHORTCUT to folder "X", I get the error message above and
then the Active Desktop Recovery screen after I report the error to
Microsoft. If I dont report it, I just get a the screen flashing off
for a second and then back to my desktop.

Note, however, that if I just double click on a shortcut to a folder,
it opens fine, as normal. It is ONLY when I right click and attempt to
"Explore" the shortcut to folder or disc that I get teh error message!

What have I tried so far?

I've re-installed IE 6 Ser Pack 1; I've run SFC /scannow; I've run
Symantec Anti-Virus on my HD; I've run Window Washer; I've run Spybot;
I tried to use System Restore but it wouldn't let me go back far
enough.

Here is part of the error message info:
This is this error report (there is more but I could not copy and
paste it, so this is all I had the patience to manually copy down):
"Error Signature

Any ideas?

Not quite the same as you but similar.

If I explored via a desktop short cut Explorer would crash at random. If I
explored via My Computer and drilling down it worked fine. The solution was
to delete the short cut and re-create it as follows. Explore to the folder
via My Computer, Right click and select create short cut. It may object and
offer to create it on the desktop instead - in which case click yes.

Worth a try.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I did it and it did not keep the
problem from happening. Luckily I can still perform all functions but
it bothers me that something is wrong with my computer and concerns me
that this may be just the tip of an iceberg...
