Error Upgrading to .NET Framework 1.1

This question had been asked, but I cannot find any answer. When I try to
upgrade to .NET Framework 1.1, I receive the following messages:

"Fatal Execution Engine Error (0x7926fcd8)"

And the next box:

"Application had generated and exception that could not be handled.
Process id=0x97c (2428), Thread id=0x7d8 (2008)."

Please help! I need this to code for a project.

How are you upgrading, by Windows Update or have you downloaded the .NET
Framework 1.1? What's currently installed on your machine?
 
I've tried both, and neither works. But, I've mostly been using Windows Update.
