The server privatenews.microsoft.com definitely exists, and it
answered on port 119 for me via telnet.
I am curious why, if you're an MVP, you are using the inferior
web interface for Microsoft Communities. Are you able to
subscribe to newsgroups on other NNTP servers, such as
this one (msnews.microsoft.com)?

Instructions for accessing the MVP newsgroups at privatenews.microsoft.com
are available on the MVP website. You'll need your Passport or Windows Live
ID.

I just re-checked the mvp site for details on how to set up newsgroup
privatenews.microsoft.com , its not mentioned any thing regarding requirment
of
Passport or Windows Live Id. Though I will try to use them anyways to check
it works out.

It should work with those settings.
Are you running any third party firewall software?
Have you tried adding your ISP's news server?

I used to use https://connect.microsoft.com and set up an account there (but
now forgot the password). Not sure if that affects.

It's the first time I use WinMail and I don't have anything set up before I
tried to add a newsgroup account. I also tried to configure my live ID and
password but no luck. I am only running Windows Firewall, no 3rd party
firewall software. I think msnews.microsoft.com is my ISP's news server...
any other ideas?

Thanks,
Jun

What country are you in, and who is your ISP?
Msnews.microsoft.com is a news server that belongs to Microsoft
and it is not affiliated with any ISP. The larger ISP's all have their
own news server.

Yup.. I do work in Microsoft but I seem not be able to set up settings
correctly to view newsgroups through WinMail.

All I can suggest is to check with some of your co-workers.
It should work. Msnews.microsoft.com has never failed to
connect for me, especially now under Windows Mail since
it comes pre-configured under the alias Microsoft Communities.

I believe the problem is when Win Mail setups the new account it set ups the
server name with the portal number as a part of the server name. I think if
you right click on the newsgroup and select properties, then go and edit out
the :119 from the server name it will work.

Is there a reason why you have spell checking turned off?
I'm having trouble reading what you wrote.
