then paste it into a reply.

Are you connected to Verizon when this happens?

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Subject 'Re: paw', Account: 'Kate's Mail', Server:
'outgoing.verizon.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Error
Number: 0x800CCC0F

yes, i am connected to verizon when this happens.

thanks.

This problem is likely due to interference from a non-compatible
antivirus. Which antivirus are you running?

Do you have have the setting for Outgoing server authentication set
correctly?
Go to Tools - Accounts - (your account) - Properties - Servers
make sure there is a checkmark in the box for "My server requires
authentication"
Ok

If this doesn't help, then perhaps it's interference from your anti-virus,
anti-spyware, or anti-spamware programs.

Trend Micro's antivirus can definitely cause this problem.
As a temporary test uninstall your antivirus, reboot, then
try Windows Mail again. If that fixed the problem, we can
recommend a free antivirus that is more compatible with
Windows Mail.

Your other option is to upgrade to Windows Live Mail, which
seems to be more resistant to interference from antivirus programs.

A recent version of the Trend antivirus program (details not available)
causes assorted problems in Windows Mail, and musy be uninstalled,
not just disabled, to stop it from causing these problems. You may
then need to remove your email account under Windows Mail, then
restart Windows Mail and add the account again.

If this cures your problem, you may want a replacement antivirus
program that doesn't cause such problems. Most versions of the
Norton and McAfee antivirus programs are bad choices; they
also cause problems in Windows Mail, possibly even more often.
I recommend either avast! or AVG, either one with a custom
install that tells it to leave out the part that scans email.

I suspect that I've seen problem reports saying that Webroot
Spyware also causes problems in Windows Mail, but I
recommend that you wait for someone else whose memory
is clearer on this before you uninstall it.

You can have more than one antispyware program without
problems. I use three of them:

The third is Windows Defender, from Microsoft. I don't
remember if it came with Vista or I downloaded it later.

It would have been helpful if you had identified which antivirus you
are running.
Most Norton, McAfee, and Trend Micro antivirus products cause problems
with Windows Mail.

One option is to upgrade to Windows Live Mail, which is more resistant
to interference from antivirus programs:

In some antivirus programs, you disable email scanning and leave it
disabled.
In others, either you can't do this, or it doesn't help if you do, so you
have to
uninstall that antivirus program instead.

Well, I have, and tried, Norton 2008, McAfee 10-in-1 ISS, SpySweper, Trend PCCillin and SpyBot S&R (free) with Vista HP on my HP DV9500. Had no problems at all with McAfee (well once after a restore that turned off one of the need services, easy fix), minor problems with WebRoots SpySweeper Antivirus and Trend's PC-Cillin, none with SpyBot S&R, and major bugs with Norton. It not only screwed up WinMail, but it disables, without telling you, the Restore System. Many updates and Installs and Apps had to be manually configured. Norton was very automatic in Vista.

A sample size of one is seldom definitive.
We go by the overwhelming evidence of many reports posted in this newsgroup
over the past 15 months.

i am running trend micro virus 2008. this is what the geek squad at best buy
told us to get for our new laptop.

Depends. What virus program are you running? Most have a permitted-programs or permitted access or trusted sites list some where where you dial in the tweaks. Most good programs, when first installed, will ask about each app and access as it occurs and learns what is OK and what is not. My favorite which has worked will for me without issues in Vista is McAfee 10-in-1 ISS. Had Norton at first. Did not work well with Vista - at all! - dumped it, got McAfee. Other then having to turn it off for the SP1 update, I've had no problems and it has some very nice extra features and tools. Does all my computer maintenance for me automatically (backups, scans, disk cleanup, defrag, etc.). Tracks attacks and ISP's for you, Internet Site Advisor (regular, not the SA Plus - that was too annoying). For the money, it's about the best out there. Runs something like a 98% against everything. The only better programs are the German ones that cost around $90 - more with the falling
dollar against the Euro. VioSoftware and Amazon have good prices on it for full and OEM versions.

to trust that geek squad to do much more than take your money?
You may want to try turning off email scanning in it, and leave it turned
off, to see if that helps. However, that's unlikely, so you'll probably
have to uninstall it instead. You may then need to remove your email
account under Windows Mail, then restart Windows Mail and add
the account again.

I don't have a Trend antivirus program, so I don't know if it's even
possible to turn off just the email scanning. Can you find an option
to ask Trend, since they're more likely to know and could take
your request as a request to add that feature, if they haven't
already?
